DARK DRAMA MOOD BOARD

In early 2016 I'll be shooting my next short film. It's a departure from my usual type of work and much more serious in tone. The film will be very visually dark, with lots of hazy backlighting and contrasty imagery.

Something I always do once I've finalised a script is create a mood board as it helps me visualise the mood and tone of the film. This time I've created two mood boards, both comprised of cinematography from some amazing films, but they're separated by aspect ratio, one being 1.85:1, the other 2.35:1.

Check them out below and see how many films you recognise. (Click for higher res).

CINEMA JAM HOOP

The lovely people at Cinema Jam have been kind enough to make me their Jammer of the Month on their magazine The Spread. The interview covers such topics as my approach to filmmaking, why my films tend to be dark comedies, and my previous films including Plastic Love and Terry and BrendaRead my ramblings here.

VENICE

My girlfriend and I recently spent a few days in Venice, which is an amazing and unique city. I didn't bother taking any camera kit with me as I couldn't be bothered carrying it around, so I used my trusty iPhone 5s to capture some footage. I swear most of my showreel will eventually be all phone footage. Hopefully I managed to capture some of the atmosphere of Venice and the surrounding islands of Murano and Burano. I hope you enjoy it.

Here's my previous holiday video from Nerja, also entirely shot on iPhone.

SUGAR & VICE - AW15 / CIRCUS PROMO

Here's a short promo I made for the Autumn/Winter 2015 collection from Sugar & Vice. This promo concentrates on the jewellery that's inspired by the circus.

Some random trivia... I didn't have my slider with me for this shoot, so I used my tried and tested "magazines under tripod" technique. Worked like a charm.

There's much more jewellery in the AW15 collection, including my personal favourite, this axolotl.

NAUGHTY NAUGHTY POSTER

Last week I filmed my latest short film called Naughty Naughty, (check out the mood board here). The shoot went great, or as the lead character would say, "it were proper Bobby Dazzler!" My tiny cast and crew were amazing, big thanks to Beth Vyse, Nathan Dean Williams, Helen Miles and Samuel Dore.

At some point I'll be releasing a teaser trailer but for now check out the teaser poster I made below.
"As far back as I can remember, I always wanted to be a gangster."

SUGAR & VICE - AFTERNOON TEA PROMO

Here's a short promo I made for the latest jewellery collection from Sugar & Vice, called The Afternoon Tea Collection. After filming I promptly devoured all the props, if only all projects involved cakes and biscuits.

Being as this is such a short video I decided to use it as an opportunity to play around with the 4K on my GH4. The level of detail in the footage is pretty insane, especially when you consider the GH4 is generally classed as a 'prosumer' camera and records straight onto SD cards internally. I wouldn't shoot everything in 4K but I think for smaller projects and anything that requires post-stabilisation it could be really useful.

There's much more jewellery in the Afternoon Tea Collection than I could fit into the promo so check it out here: www.sugarandvicedesigns.com/collections/the-afternoon-tea-collection

CLAIRE JONES - JOURNEY

Over the last few months I've been documenting the making of Claire Jones' latest album. Claire is a really talented harpist and was Official Royal Harpist for several years.

I filmed behind the scenes of the album being recorded at St Augustine's Church in Kilburn, which is really stunning inside and sounds great with a full orchestra playing. I also got to climb a mountain in Pembrokeshire and film some really incredible scenery in the Preseli Hills, which was a stark reminder of just how unfit I am.

THINKFUN - COMPOSE YOURSELF

Here's a promo I made for ThinkFun, a great company that make "addictively fun games that sharpen your mind." It's all about their latest product called Compose Yourself, which enables everyone to be a composer within minutes.

The highlights of this project were filming a full orchestra playing in Abbey Road Studios, and interviewing world famous percussionist Evelyn Glennie. Big thanks to Helen Miles for her audio work.

DARK COMEDY MOOD BOARD

I'm currently in very early pre-production on my latest short film. Something I always do once I've finalised a script is create a mood board, I find it helps me to visualise the mood and tone of the film. Some of the images relate to the actual script and others are purely random that I like and fit the tone. Check it out below and see if you recognise any film references. (Click for higher res).
